Q: How much am I expected to already know about my dream home before contacting builders?
A: Most good builders are experienced enough to help their clients build their dream home at any stage they may be in.
But before you call a builder you should have a few ideas about your new home. Having the basics decided before you start will help to make the process more enjoyable and avoid some common headaches for both you and the builder.
A good place to start is to sit down with your family and decide what you are going to need from your new home.
How many bedrooms are you going to need? How many bathrooms? Are you going to need a home office or a den? Do you want all the utilities on one floor?

Once you’ve hammered out the needs of your new home, start looking at prints or drawing.
A good place to start with prints is online. The Internet has thousands of sites full of blueprints you can view at your leisure without having to buy just yet.
After you have a good idea of the needs of your home and a general idea of what it will look like, you should start thinking of where you want to live. Some builders only build in certain areas and others build all over.
When you’ve got the needs of your home, and general appearance, and the area to live in decided, it’s time to call a couple of builders and start moving forward with your dream home!
